How to Use Social Bookmarking to Get Your Webpages Ranked By Lee ColeIf you follow my articles, I'm sure you'll notice that I love social bookmarking! That's because it's a way I can do two things I love to do: create traffic and get my pages ranked high in the search engine results pages (SERPs). I've written an article about using social bookmarking to create traffic. This article is going to focus on using social bookmarking to get your pages ranked higher. (Which has the by-product of creating even more traffic.) How does Google actually decide what order to return webpages in an organic search? Well, there are probably about three people on Earth who know the whole story, but they're kept under lock and key in California. (Just kidding!) There are a lot of theories about what's called Google's algorithm, but really no one knows for sure. You can be sure of a few things. There are probably hundreds of metrics that Google keeps track of to rank pages. A few of these metrics Google actually talks about. One of these is the number of incoming links your site has. (These are usually called backlinks.) Social bookmarking is a great way to create a ton of incoming links to your site. This happens in several ways. When you post one of your site's pages to Digg, for instance, a link is created from Digg to your web page. Digg posts tend to rank high in Google's SERPs, so you get the benefit of your actual post to Digg ranking for your search term and linking back to your site. If your post creates a buzz in the social bookmarking community, then a few other webmasters are going to link to you, blog about you, etc. more links are created this way, too! But that's not the only benefit you get from social bookmarking. Another metric Google surely keeps track of is how many visitors you get to your site. Now, they don't know this 100%, but since Google gets 70% or so of all the searches done on the Internet, they can extrapolate from the traffic that comes through them to figure out how much traffic you probably have in all. Social bookmarking creates more visitors to your site, which Google rewards by ranking your site's page even higher. Finally, how long a visitor stays on your site is surely another metric Google keeps up with. Also, if the visitor clicks through your site, or hits the back button and leaves. If you're doing your social bookmarking correctly, then you're exposing your web pages to a community that is interested in them. This causes a sort of self-filtering phenomenon, where your visitors are filtered by the social bookmarking site before they enter your site. So, you get visitors more likely to respond to your site in a positive way, either reading more than one page, or taking the action you want them to take and clicking through. Social bookmarking delivers huge benefits to webmasters. Not only can you get immediate traffic, but as we've seen you can get high page rankings as well.
